I second and third the IKEA lamps. I own several desktop models and a clip-on model. They're both $10. I've been eyeballing the floor model, I believe it's $30. EDIT - NO, I just checked and they've dropped in price to $20!!! Even better!!! Woot woot!!
The thing to know about these IKEA Jansjo lights is that they're kind of like spotlights. If you want the light to be broadcast over a large area, these are not the lamps for you (at least, the smaller ones aren't. I can't speak for the floor model because I don't have one - yet!
) These lamps have a bright, focused beam that is great for handwork.
