I just retrieved the gingham goose patterns that I have among my stash. Granted, the ones I have date back many years and I have no idea what the more recently printed patterns recommend but I'm going to suggest using a product such as Steam a Seam to put some "glue" behind those appliques. They are fairly large and if the edges of the applique fray with use, such as children give those designs, they are going to be in bad repair such as the train one that I had to fix. Take advantage of ways to anchor the designs so they stand the use that children will give them.
