My thoughts were "on point" also. But I would try not to cut the blocks down, especially if you would be cutting into the design. I would add a border around each block of some light pastel, then cut those borders so all blocks are the same. Some borders would end up being larger than others, but that would be better than cutting into the embroidery work.
