I'm not sure where you were reading about older Brother machines, but from what I have read, seen on this forum about vintage Brother machines, seems to be worth fixing. Maybe the plastic ones would not be worth fixing, but from the image I saw it looks like it would be a good strong machine.

I was hoping Cari (resident Brother go-to person) would know something about this particular model. Maybe she just hasn't visited since you posted.
