Thanks everyone. I'll start with the starch, since I'm very fond of my 1/4 inch foot with that nice rail that my eye is so used to watching.
If I'm still unhappy, I'll try the walking foot. I do know that it seems that the 2 pieces want to slide apart when I'm just about at the end of the seam. Grr.
