Can you picture this quilt using 3 1/2" squares? IMHO, I'm afraid 'chunky' is what you may get. Is there any chance you could make the quilt with 2 1/2" squares? I just think it would look better.
The centre of this quilt is 36 squares high, so if you used 3.5" squares it would be 108" tall (plus borders). Imagine this quilt being about 50% wider, and queen sized... does it look too chunky? If so, then you should use smaller squares.
I think "chunky" is in the eye of the beholder. 2.5" squares work well for small quilts, but IMO can sometimes make the overall pattern too small for large ones.
