I'd use a slate blue/gray or a neutral tan--but I've found that a sage green (what Jamie Wallen calls baby poop green) is a surprise on how well it works with other colors.
Sorry your daughter lost her heart to a louse--but glad she found out now rather than later. I like your idea of making it for another friend--I probably would have been tempted to take a rotary cutter to it!
