I've purchased plastic from WalMart for this purpose. They have several different grades of plastic on rolls.
I, too, attended a workshop where the instructor had us bring our own sheet of plastic for FMQ drawings. I might have gotten mine at Michael’s or WalMart and I took painter’s blue tape and folded it around all four edges (like binding) in case there were sharp edges. I use it all the time but also to draw shapes for appliqué so I can decide where to fussy cut the fabric.
