I know Medicare is changing from using SS numbers on their cards so this is probably true. I tried to check snopes.com but it was so slow I gave up. You can't be too careful these days.
I just got another possible scam alert from a friend. I wouldn't be surprised if it's true. Scammers are calling saying starting 4/1/18 Medicare is changing from using SS numbers to alpha numeric. Scammers are saying until it comes you need a temporary card that will cost you $50. Then they want your bank account or credit card number so they can process the temp card. Medicare will not call you unless you tell them to and you do not need a temporary card.
