Mine does that too, unless the machine stops in the highest position for the needle. If you have it stop in the "needle down" position then crank the wheel to get the needle up just a little, when you start sewing again the needle has to go up first, before it goes down, and that is when it becomes unthreaded. At least on mine, that's what happens.
