I also have the Baby and use it for 5" squares. I've never found them to cut to 4 7/8". I usually starch my fabrics well and proceed to cut them - don't necessarily cut on length of grain (if I do it is accidental!) Never had a problem with the way I cut. Just my 2 cents....for what it's worth!
I rarely starch anything.
I cut some squares yesterday for some upcoming swaps. They had been laundered and ironed, but not starched. I did not think about the direction of the fabric when I used the Baby Go. They came out to be 4 7/8". Of course, then I remembered.
I just cut the rest by hand.
I contacted Acuquilt when I first got it and realized that it was not cutting correctly. They explained the length of fabric thing. They explain that in great detail. They tell you not to use width of fabric, as it will not be accurate.
I understand that starched fabric would stretch less. Unstarched will stretch on the width of grain and will not give you an accurate cut.
