Love your idea. Being from the Midwest, I have always loved the changing landscape from a plane too, with the fields planted in different crops, the furrows and roads, and houses few and far between. I think a serpentine stitch would serve you well if you have it as a stitch on your machine (shallow elongated "S" shapes). It kind of replicates the tilling in the fields. Here is a block I made for a quilt signifying where we live, using a similar idea.
