After I get the first #1 done, for example, I lie it next to my machine and use it as a guide for all the subsequent ones. It has saved me many mistakes. I'm sure others do the same, but I just wanted to suggest it.
i just really learned PP'ing and had to come up with a similar process. I know what really helped me was writing the color on each of the spaces on the PP. (i.e.; BG = background; DK BL= Dark Blue etc.) that way I always knew what fabric went where. If a block had multiple PP, I typically, cut out all the pieces and lay them out as the block...then Inwiuld chose colors and write on the PP. Made cutting out fabrics for each one easier, too.
