I did it!
I took the barrel out, loosened the screw at the back end, pushed the stud fully in and while I held it in place my husband tightened the tiny screw and now the spring is working.

Just as long as it releases the tension discs when you raise the presser foot, it doesn't have to have a smashed end. Some have used other things the same length and diameter.
