...... agree ..... and they will also knock a quilt down if the binding has a lot more on the back than on the front. It should be almost equal.

With that in mind, I have done some bindings at only 2", if I am only wanting to sew at 1/4".
Some quilts you have to keep to that strictly. Eg. star points right to the edge, or if the quilt is all squares, you dont want the squares to be out of proportion from the rest of the quilt, etc.

Binding widths can pretty much be whatever you want!!!
.... sometimes I make a really wide binding, starting with 5" or 6" of fabric before folding and attaching. It puts a nice frame around the quilt.
