Sometimes turning your back to the quilt hanging on your design wall and looking at it through a mirror over your shoulder will help "distance" yourself from the individual blocks, giving you an overall perspective. Or through the wrong end of a pair of binoculars.
You can also use one of those door peep things to put it farther away. I learned that at a quilt camp and they are tiny enough to keep close by. Never heard about the mirror trick, might give that a try.
