It's strickly up to you. Some people like the patina a postcard gets when it is mailed. I however, do not. I put a lot of time and effort in my postcards and consider them mini works of art. I use an envelope.(I buy them by the box at Walmart.) A lot of times, I use 3D elements that can get stuck in a machine. So, I always insist that they are hand canceled. They take time on order as they come from England.
