Read the instructions closer. Hand wash while it is still free. (I don't prewash my batting so this doesn't apply to me)
Once you have captured it inside a quilt, feel free to machine wash on gentle, low or air tumble dry.
You don't have to worry about all those quilts you gave away. They will be fine.
