I have always left the fabric under my dresden plates, though thought to myself it was a waste. I also machine quilt so the layers are no big deal and I'm going for speed. But it is a lot of fabric under there that could be used for another project.
Seems like the irregular shape would be more of a bother than the amount of fabric "rescued" would be worth.
