I'd buy one of those rolling sewing machine carriers that I used to see at the old Hancock's Fabrics stores. Surely JoAnn's has them too. Then carry it on the plane and ask the flight attendant to put it in their closet for the flight. I think that would be the safest way to get it home.
Something along the order of these... buy the smallest one that it can fit in.
