I Googled Disappearing 4 patch variations and came up with several cute results. These are the only two I looked at. There are YouTube videos listed. Have fun!

Edited to add: Just a thought....if your four patches are too small to make the pattern look good, think about making a 12 or 16 patch and see how cutting that would work. I would do that by using graph paper and coloring in a 16 patch and cut the paper up instead of cutting up your squares without knowing how it will turn out. Just think...you could invent a new look. Or you could cut corner to corner, add a thin (maybe 1/2" finished) sashing to add some interest. Swap the innards of the blocks around for more fun.
