One other thing you might try is a tear away stabilizer underneath. It really helps. I usually buy the Pellon brand as it's generally less expensive but any brand will work. When you're done and tearing away the stabilizer -- hold on to the block close to where your tearing and gently tear. Another great thing to use is the tear away/wash away -- which means the first time the quilt is washed, all the excess stabilizer on the back will dissolve and be gone! :D

If you don't have the money iron some COFFEE FILTERS flat. Then just pin to under side of your applique. They are free (usually in my cabinet already) and easy to trim/tear away.


I'll have to remember the coffee filters -- certainly would be a lot cheaper than the cheapest stabilizer :lol:
