Default Skipped stitches: help!

I’m needing some help. I’m straight-stitch applique-ing thick (JoAnn’s by-the-yard) acrylic felt into a quilted wall hanging/banner. The first 5 or 6 letters went totally fine, then it started skipping stitches. I changed the needle, assuming it was dull and/or gummed up from the glue stick I used to hold the letters down. No luck with a new needle. Changed from universal 90/14 to a topstitch (also 90/14, I believe). No luck. Re-threaded the machine, dusted it out, all the obvious fixes, but it’s still doing it! It’s not just one stitch... it’s multiples in a row. I’m using Superior Threads King Tut top and bobbin.

Any tips?? This project has been a nightmare from day 1, and I just want to get it finished! 😤
