I'm satisfied if I just finish a quilt; shape is rarely a factor for me! I like both square and rectangular quilts, as they both are useful. As for making a North Star Quilt for a male, I know that my husband likes geometric shapes and prefers symmetry -- even in quilts -- so that would be a winning design for him.

I looked up the North Star Quilt pattern, and it would certainly be easy to add two extra rows to make it rectangular. However, the square quilt is already 80". Adding two extra rows would make it 80" x 106", which would make it unwieldy. I would stick with the square version of it which does have a pleasing symmetry.
