This is timely for me because I just went through about 4 dozen old quilt magazines and pulled out all the patterns I liked and organized them in sheet protectors in binders. Very soon I noticed that almost every single one of the "new" patterns offered over the several years worth of various magazines are variations of old, traditional patterns. They don't go out of style, but each quilt designer manages to put a personal interpretation into it, and that's what makes each one special. The only quilts that tend to look passe to me after years have passed are the ones that too closely adhered to the trends of the moment. For a time about 20 years ago there were far too many quilts that had lime green and purple, and that can get old in a hurry if it's everywhere you look. Still, some people managed to give even those trendy choices a timeless flavor - beats me how they did it. If you want to do a spider web quilt, what's to stop you?!
