I put a 3" piece of heavy muslin on the edge of the top that will be attached to the take up roller and to the edge that is attached to the top roller. This allows me to stitch to within 1/4 inch of the fabric edge without hitting the canvas. I put it on with a long basting stitch for easy removal when done quilting.
