I don't know about using it for backing, but years ago I made a trip around the world out of baby wale corduroy in pine green, browns and gold for my brother. I used thick batting, backed it with a satin chocolate brown sheet and tied it down. It's been decades (seriously, about 40 years) and the darn thing is still holding together and looking pretty good!

Funny you should post this, I was at a fabric store today and there was a display of similar corduroy near the cutting counter and I was fingering it and remembering the one for my brother...
