unless you want to stick to quilt-as-you-go, you need a machine with a decent sized throat of at least 9".
none of those are inexpensive, i'm afraid.
set your budget first.
then shop around. stick to brands you can take to a nearby place that is certified to repair/service them, whether or not you bought them there.
brother and babylock each rolled out new machines last month.
you might find some good deals on used models at various levels, so a higher end model will fit into your budget.
