Onemoe, I was thinking of the birthing method for sandwiching and finishing a quilt too when I read about this knife method. Basically, the seam around the edge of the quilt would be nearly the same. Usually the birthing method involves machine sewing the edge though. The quilts I've seen done that way hold up very well in washing. However, anything that's hand sewn seems to me to have the potential for being less secure, unless the stitches are very small.
