The disappearing 9 patch would work well for what you have. You can make a decent lap size quilt with 9 fat quarters for the blocks. To make a bigger quilt just make more blocks, then you can use your yardage for the border. You would need to get some solid or other fabric to use as the background. I made one using 5 inch charm squares for the 9 patches. You could cut your layer cakes and get (4) 5 inch squares out of each. The nice thing about this pattern is you don't cut your pieces small so it's great for showing off fabric that's really pretty. [ATTACH=CONFIG]602305[/ATTACH]
