i've done it both ways.
you still end up with long seams, either across or in columns, with intersections that must match.

i pin the intersections.
then i do a few stitches across each one.
if any are not lined up correctly, i only have to unsew those stitches.
once it's all as good as it can possibly get i sew the long seam.

takes a little longer but my results are more consistent.
