When I started quilting, I knew nothing. ( I still do not know much)
I cut mine 1 1/2 inches wide on the straight of the grain. I just sew down on the front by machine, and then fold over and hand sew on the back. Mine quilts don't take punishment so I am comfortable with this procedure.
