I usually make my runner binders a bit smaller as you have done. Whatever width you choose use, its the same formula. Fold binding in half, line up the outside edges with the quilt, and sew 1/3 of the ironed width of the binding. One third sewed down, up one third, and down the other side of the quilt. They should come out perfect. I also put all my bindings on by machine. I always sew the binding on the back (which opposite the traditional way), bring the binding up and then down around to the front, and machine stitch it down.
