That is a good question, I think I started with the 8 pointed star block and a bordered secondary block, then things kind of morphed. I have a program called Glass Eye 2000 that I use for designing stained glass and it works great for designing quilts. I start with the two blocks and repeat them and move seams until I like the look. I think this one went thru about 8 changes until I was happy with it. Terese only asked for purple and gray the rest was up to me. I'm a little disappointed in a few of my fabric placements but overall its nice (some of the opposites don't contrast as much as I thought they would) .
