Have you tried to put a piece of tape over the hole, move the needle up and down to make a hole in the tape? I think it will be worth a try. Might have to use more then one layer of tape and then change when needed.
I did this with my granddaughter's machine. We were both sewing and she kept sneaking over to my Singer 301 for the reason you mentioned. I taped her zigzag machine so it only had a small opening. Problem solved.
