The beauty of the shadow box is that you can play with sashing (background color) to get odd sizes to fit together. I did that on this T-shirt quilt

I tried to make the blocks using a common denominator as Rhonda K suggested. I didn't work in quadrants but tried to get large sections of the quilt to fit together then fudged the sashing size to get to all work.
