Let's make it fun for him too. At the hardware store, especially Harbor Freight if you have one, a magnetic bowl (garage people puts nuts and bolts in them, quilters put pins). A long scissor like locking tweezer. These are great for turning fabric tubes and picking up things that drop behind the sewing machine. They also have rotary blades for cutting cardboard--some people like them for quilting, some don't. A canvas tool carry bag for loading up and taking to classes.
