Welcome aboard! Sadly even though I have access to a long arm, choosing quilting designs is a huge stumbling block for me. I just don't think in terms of the 3-D of quilting, my brain is still stuck in the 2-D of the piecework.

I will say that I recently made a lap quilt in celebration of a friend's retirement for quilting. It's very simple, just 8" finished squares representing each letter of the alphabet. Her name is Suzan and I had a friend help me photoshop a picture of her head onto a Supergirl clip art, and then I made the block into a snowball with Stars in the corner. It's going to be awkwardly placed but I did decide to just do outlined S which will (most likely) go through my friend's face... Sometimes there are no good answers

Maybe use a clear thread and simple quilting?
