Default Lap Quilt Quandary

I’m busy making a lap quilt from a jelly roll. The roll is made up of 20 pieces with an aboriginal/Australian theme - each piece has a different pattern. I trimmed each strip to 36” long with the intention of making a scrappy binding from the off cuts.

I decided to use a quilt-as-you go/stitch and flip (?) method and have spent the last couple of days ‘stitching and flipping’. In my calculations the 20 strips SHOULD have given me a total length of 40” but when I’ve measured it it is only 36” long.

I’ve googled lap quilt sizes and there doesn’t seem to be any hard and fast rules so I wondered what you think.

My husband says I should just make the lap quilt square instead of rectangular ...
