Judith, fabric for a specific project you've had in mind for so long and are already cutting up to work on would not count as a slip for me. A slip for me would buying fabric just because it is pretty and putting it on the shelf.

Before I took my machine to the shop, I did finish up on project from stash. I needed a last minute gift for a young boy, so I put this together from 5" precuts. The sashing and binding were from stash. Over Christmas, I had picked up some fleece throws as gifts for unexpected guests, and had one leftover. I used it as a backing, and did the fmq without any batting. I think I spent about 6 hours total on it without having to buy a single thing.
