I don't know where I got the idea that it was cheap.
DH and I use Uber often when we visit larger cities and find it very convenient. It is cheaper (and easier in MHO) than hailing a cab...especially busy time in NYC. Watson is right that the rates fluctuate during peak times or in high volume areas. When we were in DC once, we found out that if we walked a couple blocks off the Main Street in Georgetown, the price dropped...I guess it was easier for he Uber driver to pick us up at a quieter location. They say tip is included in the fare but like you, we generally give a tip to the driver anyway.
