before you change anything else (you have done excellent problem solving exercises, well done) give your fabric a good spray starching, and see that changes anything.

Also always thread the machine with the presser foot up so the tension discs are allowing free flow for the threading process.

Machines with embroidery capabilities generally have a tiny zig when straight stitching.
