I am planning to make a shadow quilt wall hanging using 30 mini postage stamp rectangles from zebra patterns. They look like postage stamps from various places.

I am looking for a pattern or advice on how to calculate the shadow borders for this size rectangle. I am not good at conceptualizing or improvizing size. Also, do you have any suggestiosn for colors to use for the shadows since each "stamp" contains various colors. I see many ideas online but they are all mostly for squares, not rectangles. Any suggestions on how to calculate this are appreciated. I want the shadows to look like shadows!!
