I get what you're saying about the blue around the diamonds overwhelming the center but I like the littler triangles that sort of sparkle and pop, so diamonds work for me.
The darker borders you chose I think work great with the white background and set off the blue/diamond border. Such beautifully unusual fabric! You did a great job making it all work well together.
