Thanks all. Minky or sometimes spelled Minkee is a very, very silky feeling, soft, textured fabric..I think it is polyester..not sure. It is napped, and feels like real short cut, soft fur. Babies and kids AND ADULTS love to feel it. It's wonderful for baby lovey quilts too.
There's different styles of Minky..this one is the "dots" minky. Then they have plain, ribbed, etc.
I bought mine at Joann's, and you can get it online too! It's not cheap....$10-$18 a yard..but it's 60" wide. I only buy it when it's on sale or I have a coupon to use on it. Hobby Lobby has some now, and so does Hancock Fabrics.
It's no problem to sew with the minky, and especially for the raggy quilts, as I use a walking foot for all the sewing on the raggy quilts...the X ing, the seams, everything. I double stitch all of my raggy quilts for kids, so they withstand lots of washings and lots of use! I double stitch the outside edge too, before all the clipping. Makes for a very durable item.
You can also use Chenille in raggy quilts too for that soft, fluffy feeling. Some ladies buy up old chenille bedspreads and cut squares, then use them in their raggy quilts.
Look out if you get started on raggy quilts for kids, grandkids......as they go fast, and it's fun, and it's "no thinking" type of sewing.....so great to do it when you can't concentrate on intricate traditional patterns, but yet you want to sew..sew...sew. They are addicting! LOL!
