When I do raw edge applique, I do zig-zag around the edges in a "buttonhole" stitch. The closer together the stitches are, the less likelihood there is of raveling. I've never done straight stitching on applique edges, but then I'm still a rank amateur when it comes to making quilts. I have had some remarkable success with the method I use. I haven't heard any complaints thus far! lol!
