I've also heard the term coping strip when you have several blocks and they aren't all the same size. By sewing a strip around each one (say about an inch), then cutting all the blocks the same size, one doesn't notice the slight differences in the original block sizes. I've used coping strips around pre printed panels to make them an even size as well.
