I do "get" those that "disagreed" with the majority

If one wants to get 7 fat quarters from one piece of fabric, one does need two yards of fabric. (Actually, a tiny bit more) - and there will be one fat quarter "left over".

One will end up with 8 pieces, but if one wants the length - or are cutting for kits or some such thing - that is what one would need.

But - assuming that one is cutting the fabric from the same width of fabric - 1-3/4 yards of fabric will have the same number of square inches as 7 fat quarters.
