A split design will say so and comes in two parts to load into your machine. The design stitches out the first half (sometimes the second part first if there are overlaying stitches), then you release the hoop, move to the next connect slot and select the second part of the design. I have PEDesign software, but there are many full digitizing softwares that can split your favorite 5x7 designs. I seem to remember seeing a program by BuzzTools that was especially for splitting.
