I cut bindings at 2.5" too.

Leftovers of 20.5" long are kept for my 'go to' square in a square pattern for Linus quilts. Cut 2 x 6.5" and 3 x 2.5" pieces and lay out as a square (long pieces at the top and bottom with a row of 3 squares in the middle). Lay out two blocks side by side and swap the centre pieces over. Here's what it will look like when finished.

If the strip is only 18", not long enough for a centre square to swap over, just use any scrap to finish the square.

I make these blocks when I want to do some mindless sewing and keep them to one side until I have enough of coordinating colours for a quilt. Sometimes I'll have a pile of 100+ blocks waiting for the grandchildren to lay out a quilt that they think is good. I take their word for it and just sew it together!!
